In the latest of our guest blog posts on Webanywhere websites, e-Learning Consultant Alison Hales talks about one of her favourite e-learning products, the ever-popular Planet Sherston - which is available as a bolt-on to Learnanywhere.
Pedagogy as you will know is the art and the science of education. If I was to ask someone what a pedagogue is, the most likely response would be “a teacher.” The word Pedagogue comes from the Greek word, “παιδαγωγέω (paidagōgeō)”* which literally translated means “to lead the child”.
Over the years the thoughts on pedagogues have changed and modernised as more and more teaching materials and methods have become available.
It is well known that teachers teach and educators reach. In order to transform from a teacher to an educator, you must engage your pupils, using methods that appeal to them.
To do that, today, means embracing e-learning in all forms. With all of the apps available on tablets and smartphones it’s important to see their value, and to recognise the differences between todays world, and the previous generation.
When I was at Primary school our idea of “educational games” was things like playing word bingo, or perhaps snakes and ladders with numbers. Today however, with all the technology children are surrounded by on a daily basis, they expect to be online, or at very least on a computer for most games.
True Pedagogy is more than teaching children to regurgitate facts, for exams or otherwise; it is about leading pupils to a place so they know how to learn for themselves. By setting research tasks, posing challenges, and asking the right questions, for pupils to answer, solve and explore you nurture this, and create true learning.
Planet Sherston is a games-based learning ‘bolt on’ for Learnanywhere, and creates an area to facilitate self learning - like Learn With Flobot where the pupils can choose task based games, or The Academy, where teachers can set designated tasks.
We currently have a Planet Sherston competition open. Design An Alien Avatar Competition is your schools’ chance to win a year’s subscription to Planet Sherston. You can download your teacher’s pack here.
